      About Tzolk'in
      Understanding the sacred Maya calendar

The Tzolk'in (pronounced "zol-keen") is one of the most enduring calendar systems from ancient Mesoamerica. Still used in Maya communities today, it represents a sophisticated understanding of time cycles and human experience.

      What is Tzolk'in / Chol Q'ij?

The Tzolk'in is a 260-day sacred calendar used for rituals, divination, and personal guidance. In the K'iche' Maya language, it is called Chol Q'ij ("Order of Days").

      260 Unique days in cycle
      20 Day signs (nawales)
      13 Numbers (tones)

The calendar is built from 20 day names × 13 numbers = 260 unique combinations. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, it is not divided into months or weeks. After 260 days, the cycle begins again.

Historically, the Tzolk'in was used for:

      • Ceremonies and rituals — determining auspicious days for spiritual practice
      • Divination — understanding energetic qualities of each day
      • Naming — children often receive names based on their birth day
      • Timing — agricultural and community events
      Living Tradition

The Tzolk'in remains in active use today, particularly in highland Guatemala among K'iche', Kaqchikel, and Tz'utujil Maya communities. Daykeepers (ajq'ij) continue to interpret the calendar for spiritual guidance.

      How the System Works

The Tzolk'in operates on two interlocking cycles:

      1. The 20 Day Signs (Nawales)

Each day has a unique name and associated qualities. The 20 nawales cycle continuously in fixed order: Imix, Ik, Akbal, Kan, and so on through Ahaw.

      2. The 13 Numbers (Tones)

Numbers 1 through 13 cycle simultaneously. Each number carries specific energy. When combined with a nawal, they create unique characteristics for that day.

One unique combination per day: As the two cycles turn together, each day receives a distinct pairing (for example: 1 Imix, 2 Ik, 3 Akbal...). This creates 260 unique days before the pattern repeats.

No months, no weeks: The Tzolk'in does not divide time into smaller units. It is one continuous flow of 260 days.

      The Maya Calendar System

The ancient Maya used multiple calendars simultaneously. The Tzolk'in was one component of a larger temporal framework:

      Tzolk'in

      260 days

The sacred calendar used for rituals, divination, and personal guidance.

      Haab'

      365 days

The solar calendar of 18 months (20 days each) plus 5 extra days. Used for agricultural timing.

      Calendar Round

      52 years (18,980 days)

Combination of Tzolk'in and Haab'. Every 52 years, the same day combination returns.

      Long Count

      Linear count

A system for tracking long periods from a mythological starting point (August 11, 3114 BCE).

      Correlation Note

      GMT Correlation (584,283)

This application uses the GMT correlation (named for Goodman, Martinez, and Thompson), which equates the Maya date 0.0.0.0.0 with September 6, 3114 BCE (Julian) or August 11, 3114 BCE (Gregorian).

The GMT correlation is widely accepted among scholars and yields dates consistent with historical records, astronomical events, and contemporary Maya practice.

      Modern Use & Interpretation

      Important Note on Contemporary Features

This application includes features such as birth analysis, personality profiles, "best day" recommendations, and life purpose readings. These are contemporary interpretive tools inspired by the traditional structure of the Tzolk'in.

      They are:

      • Presented for personal reflection and insight
      • Not claimed to represent exact ancient Maya beliefs
      • Developed through synthesis of traditional knowledge and modern psychological frameworks
      • Intended to help users engage meaningfully with the calendar's wisdom

The traditional Tzolk'in is a living spiritual system. This app respects that heritage while offering accessible tools for contemporary users.
